Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and is essential in the functioning of many tissues in the body. Glutamine acts as an inter-organ nitrogen and carbon transporter. Tissues require glutamine for maintaining intestinal function, immune response, and amino acid homoestasis during times of severe stress.

Glutamine is metabolised in the mitochodria and is important in providing metabolic fuel to lymphocytes, macrophages and fibroblasts.
